To get back to conventional hypnotherapy. Below are some of the more common issues that can be resolve successfully with the use of hypnotherapy.

* Stopping Smoking.

 * Weight Control

 * Self Esteem

 * Confidence

 * Anxiety

*Depression

 * Fear of Flying

* Fear of Public Speaking

 * Nail Biting

 * Grief

 * Relationships

* Various Fears and Phobias

And thes are just to name a few.

Though I deal with all of the above problems, my specialties are Smoking Cessation and Weight Control.

Note: I use the words Weight Control, rather than the more common weight loss. Why? Because when you lose something, you very often find it again!

My success rate with smokers and slimmers is exceptionally and satisfyingly, high.

I give therapy in both English and Spanish. As you would expect, most of my clients live on the Island of Mallorca,

but there are quite a number of people who come from mainland Spain, particularly Barcelona and Madrid   to see me. For me this is very satisfying. On their part it shows that they have great motivation and that's good. They must be highly motivated if they are willing to go to the extra expense of travelling out here to see me. Motivation on the part of the client is an essential ingredient in obtaining a successful outcome. You'll not stop smoking, or shed kilos, without that all important motivation.

In the tourist season I often get people coming from places like the UK, Holland and Germany, who take advantage of my services while enjoying a break in the sun.

**************************************************** WHY HYPNOTHERAPY AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

In the past couple of decades hypnotherapy has made huge strides and gained much acclaim and popularity. It is now recognised as the number one tool for bringing about weight loss, smoking cessation and for dealing with a multitude of issues. Issues that usually involve change of one sort or another.

How is this change achieved?

 Well, our habits and behaviour patterns are formed in and controlled by the subconscious mind, this is also known as the right brain, as it is on the right hand side. Once the subject is in a state of hypnosis the subconscious can be     accessed by the therapist. At this time the therapist has, if you like, a window through into the subconscious. Using direct suggestion and visualisation, the way the subconscious reacts in, or to, certain situations can be changed.

The skilled therapist may use various different techniques to achieve his goal.

 This, as stated above, usually involves bringing about some change-for-the-good in the client, or subject.

 Let's take a closer look at just how this works in say, the case of a young lady who wants to get rid of her fear of flying.

Incidentally, I treat people for this quite frequently as this problem is more common than you might imagine.

First I give the young lady a short explanation of what hypnosis is and what it isn't. This pre-talk, as I call it, is very necessary as many people arrive in my office with an entirely wrong idea of what hypnosis and hypnotherapy are all about. Many think that they are going to be asleep, or unconscious, during the proceedings. Some are uneasy, or even nervous because of these beliefs. And this is understandable, because for many people their first adventure into hypnosis is something of a step into the unknown. This, in itself can prove a little disturbing. So this pre-talk is designed, not only to be informative, but also to allay any nervousness on the part of the client. I also find that it helps in the establishing of rapport between the client and myself and this is an all important factor which, in any hypnotic session, contributes greatly to the outcome.

Once the pre-talk is done we are ready to start the actual therapy session. This begins with the induction. There are many different ways to enable the client to reach an adequate hypnotic state. My preferred method, when treating somebody for the first time, is a slow progressive relaxation induction which takes about eight minutes. It is all done by talking while the client listens with eyes closed. There are none of those swinging watches, so beloved by Hollywood film directors.

OK. so let's imagine that the aforementioned young lady, we'll call her Helen,  is in my reclining chair and I have performed the induction and she's nicely relaxed and I'm ready to go ahead with the actual therapy, this part is known as the intervention. Helen's intervention unfolds as a story. It's the story of her next flight. While I'm telling the story, she will be given certain suggestions and guided imagery which, in her hypnotic state she will feel she is experiencing 'for real'. And this is where the true power of hypnotherapy comes in to its own. The subconscious, which is now open and very receptive to my dialogue, does not know the difference between fiction and reality. It accepts everything as the gospel truth.

So this flight is not like her previous ones. These were nightmares, featuring tightness of the chest, sweaty palms, knotted stomach and above all, fear.  On the contrary, she is going to enjoy every minute of it. I shall guide her through the day of the flight, starting when she gets up in the morning full of anticipation and enthusiasm about making the trip. In her subconscious mind she is looking forward to the flight.

As I am based in Palma De Mallorca, that is where the trip starts. Helen is flying Palma to London and the flight is scheduled to take two hours.

Her bags are packed and she has a few minutes to wait before the arrival of the taxi which will take her to the airport. So, she sits down in a comfortable chair, takes two or three deep breaths and feels a wonderful relaxation flowing through her body. She knows she's really going to enjoy the whole day.

Andnow, there’s the doorbell, her taxi is waiting. Soon, in her imagination she is cruising along in the direction of the airport. She sees familiar landmarks, like Mallorca's picturesque windmills and she knows she will soon be leaving them far behind. She takes another two or three deep breaths and goes even deeper into relaxation.

Now she’s arriving at the airport. She pays the driver, finds her way to the baggage check-in and is soon watching her luggage disappear behind the scenes. She's full of enthusiasm for the flight and really looking forward to seeing her friends in London.

As there is some time to wait before boarding we then go to the bar where she has a soft drink or perhaps, a coffee. There's time for another couple of those relaxing breaths while she is marvelling at all the exciting hustle and bustle that's going on all around.

Now the flight has been called and it's time to go to the departure area and from there, after a little wait, she will board the aircraft and make the flight and then finally land in London.

 My strategy during all this remains the same. At the various stages I suggest more relaxation and more feeling of well-being and anticipation. The aircraft encounters some turbulence during the flight, it lasts two or three minutes, but she actually finds herself enjoying it.

  After what seems like no time at all, the pilot announces that we are making our descent and will soon be touching down in Gatwick. Time for some more relaxing breaths as we go down through the fleecy clouds. And then with just the slightest of bumps, we're on the ground. We are in another country. What a wonderful thing is air travel!

Now Helen’s getting her hand luggage together, as she leaves the plane the flight attendant thanks her for flying Air Utopia and it's all over. Helen has made the trip and has her two feet firmly on the ground. Furthermore, she has enjoyed the whole experience. When I bring her out of the hypnotic state and back to the here and now, she feels absolutely euphoric. She says she can't wait to make that next flight-and she means it.

Now, in the above  example we dealt with a fear.  However, habits, are approached in what may seem a different manner. However the underlying principles are much the same.

Take smoking cessation, for example. The smoker is given powerful suggestions that he has already stopped smoking; he has smoked his last cigarette. He is a Non-Smoker-right now!  Smoking is a disgusting habit and he wants no part of it. Equally powerful visualisations let him see himself in situations where, in the past, he would have smoked. But now, No Way. Cigarettes are repugnant. He is also given very effective suggestions that he will replace this now unwanted habit with another which is both healthy and beneficial. Sport or exercise is a favourite here, but it could be any of a number of things. This compensation will be chosen by the subconscious itself. Time and time again I have noticed that with many people, when coming out of a session, their first words are, "I'm a Non- Smoker."

The slimmer is given suggestions that she no longer likes certain foods. She now eats smaller portions, she eats only three times a day. She positively hates sweets and chocolates etc. She is given visualisations of (A) Her future self if she doesn't change her eating habits and (B) Her future self now that she has change her eating pattern. My star client lost 35 kilos by this method and she works, believe it or not, in a cake shop!

In the above I have tried to give the reader some idea of just how hypnotherapy works and what actually goes on during a session.

We have looked at some of the commonest problems dealt with, but hypnotherapy can be used successfully to address a great number of issues.

Hypnotherapy is all about making change. Change for the better.
